Jay SmithThe journey began in 1976,leaning to surf on a old school cut off longboard at sunglow pier.Back then we all skateboarded and surfed.Hurricane David was my first big waves in1979.Surfed with Gnarly Charlie on a 6'0 Ronnie Rainy single fin.Ronnie was the good local shaper.Won my first surf trophy in jr.mens at NSB Safari contest 1980.I was hooked.I remember one day,Ponce was ok,so Charlie,myself some friends paddled across the inlet to surf NSB and caught some epic waves.We use to do all the time when the surf was better over there.
Working on surfboards started in 1981.Fixing shaped my first board.Was the 1982 NSSA Florida Champ.Went on to surf professionally in 1984.Chuck Hundley I started Clubber Surfboards in 1985.Sanding shaping.Sold my shares in 1990.Clever Surfboards was born in 1996.Have surfed all over the world in Hawaii,Indonesia,Puerto Rico,Costa Rica,El Salvador,Nica,Guatemala,Mexico,Jamica,Cali,all East Coast typhoon lagoon.Local spots are Ponce NSB inlet.My surfing highlights and inspirations are surfing against Kelly Slater back in1988 beating him at the NSB Safari contest.And meeting surfing with Gerry Lopez in G-Land,Indo.2000.Shaping,Surfing Coaching the groms are my passion.
